 Eb Sopranos
Author: bstutsman

I recently saw an Eb Soprano that had an extension with an extra hole in the side. I am not familiar with this and I did not get to question the player about it. I thought it sounded significantly better than the usual Effer sound.

Can anyone discuss this and explain it's origin and the principle behind it?

It was probably any Eb with a Clark Fobes Eb extension designed to help the intonation of the lower clarion notes. Some people say it also has the added benefit of improving the overall tone in some way.

From Clark's site:

"The extension fits between the bell and the end of the clarinet adding a properly sized and positioned tone hole to produce the E/B twelfth. Due to the much larger impedence of sound at the end of the clarinet the long B natural is often resistant and of a much different timbre than the throat tones. My extension greatly alleviates this problem - it also reduces the oversized twelfth interval. As a very happy coincidence the extension of the air column tends to even the timber of the Eb clarinet and produces a much more supple tone through all registers."

I use the Fobes Eb extension all the time. It really does improve the intonation and tone quality of the whole instrument. Definitely a wonderful investment!

I have one of the Fobes extensions... it helps even out the sound.. My B and my E were noticeably different in timbre from the surrounding pitches.. it also allows me to fine tune the pitch. The biggest improvement though was using a Fobes barrel...longer than the stock one i had so I didnt have to pull out and it cleared up the fuzziness in my throat tones like you wouldnt believe.
