Clarinet in A

I have a copy of the Music Minus One version of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto for Clarinet in A. Although there is a transcription for Bb Clarinet, it means re-learning the entire piece in another and very demanding key.

Does anyone know of a "play along version" that has been adapted so that you can play the concerto with a Bb clarinet, using the original music?

[as an aside: when I was younger, I had the LP version and was able to change the speed of the turntable so that the I could play along, use the music as written by in Mozart, and actually be in tune!]

Alternately, are there any leads on where to get a Clarinet in A that is not prohibitively expensive?

There are version of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto for Bb clarinet, however, the clarinet part is the same for both. The only thing that's different is the accompaniment part: it's in a different key than the original.

I had the same problem with the MMO recording. However, before I got my A clarinet, I had a CD player that you could alter the pitch on so I was able to bring it up the recording to the key of Bb. If you can't find an adjustable CD player, look through the sneezy classifieds for any used A clarinets.

If you get a MIDI version of the concerto, you can use a MIDI editing program to cut out the clarinet part and transpose the whole thing up a semitone. Cakewalk or Cubase are good sequencer programs for doing this. You'll then have to play along with your computer instead of your CD-player.

Has anyone done this already?

Mark, I too bought the Music Minus One Version and
was thrown by the 5 sharps that the Bb part calls for.
David Blumberg is a Sneezy sponsor and his My Tempo Accompaniments provided a very nice CD so that I
could play along without all the sharps. Michael
