Hi,
Anyone play the Rico Grand Concert Evolution reeds?
How do they differ from the normal Gand Concert?
Which type compares to Vandoren V12 reeds?

Few reeds I've eather heard about or played that are similar to Vandoren V-12: Rico Grand Concert Evolution,Xilema Professional and Artesana,Rigotti Gold,Mozart reeds(From the same company as the Gonzalez though I don't know if the current once sold by Muncy winds are),Reeds Australia Vintage XL file cut,Alexander Superial DC(the Classique might be more similar but I've not tried it).

I have played both the Grand Concert Thick Blank as well as the Evolution. The Evolution were not as successful for me. I found them to be somewhat less vibrant and the tone and response I was able to get was not as appealing to me. I find the GC thick to work very well. I find most in the box to work very well with little or no adjustment.
As always, your results, for your set up, taste and playing style may be different. The only way to know for sure is to buy a box and see. I am sure that some will weigh in with exactly the opposite results.

I totally agree with Ed, my namesake. You have to try them to see if you like them or not. I know Morales uses the Evolution, do you think you will sound like him if you use them? I prefer the Thick Blank myself and I also like their newer Reserve reeds. They make four cuts that I'm aware of. The ones above and there "regular" cut. No one brand or cut is the same as another, you just have to try them one at a time, until you find what you like. The only problem is that you may not get a good box on the first try that goes with any brand but what's a clarinet player to do. Try, try, and try again. I have my students try many brands until they find their best fit. I found mine several years ago. ESP

I am an uncompensated Rico performer.
PS. I've just been informed that Morales no longer uses the Evolution.

I have found all of the Grand Concert reeds to be quite consistent. I have found that there is also much less variation within each box.

I used the Reserve for a week of rehearsals last week and found that it thinned out after several hours of rehearsal. It was a first for me, and I may try them again. Then again, out of the five, two played right away, and the others may be salvaged.

Thanks guys,
I know the only way to really figure it out is to buy 'em.
Of course try them all, but it all adds up. ($$)
I just don't feel like wasting $$ on boxes of reeds I'll end up not playing, therefore, I wanted some opinions so I could figure out which type I would most likely be interested in trying first.
I know enough to know that reeds dont make anyone sound like Morales, or Jon Manase, Todd Levy, etc.
Ive been using the V5, therefore I was wondering which Rico would be similiar cut or feel, if any?
Thanks for all your opinions.

I played Evolution for a while. I found them very very lively - in the end I never felt quite like I was in control, and I could never decide on the right strength. Part of the trouble was that I liked the original thinner style (blue ink) better than the thicker variation (brown stamp) they replaced it with.
The few /thin/ blank Grand Concerts I've tried reminded me a bit of Vandoren Traditional. It strikes me as a logical thing for Rico to try and clone. I might give 'em another go one day.

I just got a box of them and I think they sound very nice. I usually play a 3 Vandoren traditional and the Eveolution 3 is just a little softer and easier to play and control, so I like them. My teacher said my tone was nice with them.
