 Zinner blank tenon size problem?
Author: skennedy
Date:   2008-03-06 19:12

I'm having trouble with a mpc made from a Zinner blank. The tenon size seems to be smaller than a Vandoren and the mpc moves back and forth in the socket as I play.
The instrument is a standard R13 Eb and both the stock barrel and Chadash barrel have the same problem. The cork on the mpc is rounded and it seals well.

Is this a common problem?
What is the fix?

I like the mpc, but because of the movement the intonation is a problem.
Thanks,
Steve Kennedy

Hello,

For a quick fix, just tear a sheet of paper and wrap where the cork goes. For a permanent solution, have a repair tech install a thicker cork. Or, if you feel comfortable with work like that, do it yourself.

Your ISP says Missouri. That's not always accurate, but if so, Mike Lomax is the only repair tech I know there. He's a great guy and would do a great job on it. If you visit him, tell him I sent you!

Or for an intermediate fix, wrap Teflon tape (a.k.a. pipe thread tape or plumber's tape) around the mouthpiece tenon.

Unless it's not the cork but the tenon itself that is too small. Some suggest that when this is the case, Kraus black synthetic cork is better than regular cork. But of course it could be the cork like others suggested.

Saran wrap will be a cheap quick fix as well. so will string and plumbers tape as mentioned above.

....or even plastic electricians' tape...with cork grease, of course

Thanks for those great ideas. I'll try them.

I'm still curious about the size of the hard rubber part. It appears to be smaller in diameter than the stock Vandoren. Is this true?

Not sure why, but most off-the-shelf Eb mouthpiece tenons do seem to be undersize with Eb clarinet barrels. All the ones I've tried (and both the Vandorens I bought) have a relatively thick cork with a narrow tenon, so they do tend to rock in the barrel.

The mpc I have is a custom mpc made from a Zinner blank. My Vandorens fit just fine in the barrels. The Zinner blank does not.

My question is: Do Zinner blanks come smallish from the factory, and could I expect a similar problem in their mouthpieces for the Bb?

The two mouthpieces I have for my Bb clarinet at present are both made from Zinner blanks. They fit just fine into a Buffet R13, an older Evette Master Model and a new Leblanc Cadenza.

The Zinner blanks I have for Bb fit just fine. The Hite mouthpiece I bought for E-flat wobbles (not from a Zinner blank), so I put teflon tape around the tenon. I don't have any Zinner blanks for E-flat.
