 Sampling Acker Bilk
Author: C. Hogue
Date:   2000-08-16 17:58

All these postings about Acker Bilk got me curious about what he sounded like -- but I didn't want to invest in a CD to find out whether I liked him

OK, curious Sneezy-ites, you can hear a number of free clips from his recordings at this commercial Web site:

Listen and decide for yourself.

(He's not quite my cup of tea...)

Went there and done that ....thanks. I also listened to Eddie Daniels while I was there. While Bilk sounds okay (definitely not in capital letters), Daniels' sound was much more homogenous, in the same dimension -- does that make sense(I hate that phrase)?

~ jerry.....the non-musician (obviously) but hopefully a future clarinetist.

 What's so terrible about Acker?

After reading all these posts about how horrible he is, I checked out the sound samples. Now, MP3 on webtv, the browser I'm using right now, may not be the best of internet acoustics, but from what I heard, he plays more than a bit schmaltzy but he plays in tune, which is more than you can say for George Lewis (at least on a recording I have). If you don't like his course tone, you should hear what ethnic clarinettists from southeastern Europe, i.e., Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, sound like.

Thanks, that's real fun to explore. So Acker - A sentimental guy, I suspect that his selections are off putting to many. I generally do go for pop music (or rock actually) personally. I thought he had great control of the vibrato, wish I did when I play Greek/Bulgarian or Klezmer!
