Hi
I am going to put a new thumbrest and strap ring on my alto clarient because the ones on it are soldered together and are in a terrible place for the ring and very bad shape of the thumbrest that hurts.
I have seperate thumbrest and strap ring. I think I will leave the thumbrest at the same place, which is just slightly lower than the first right hand finger. The ring should definitely be higher, possibly on the upper joint, but I am not sure. I would like to know if anyone has an alto clarinet with a good location of the strap ring, where is it?
Thanks!

When D. Spiegelthal rehabbed my alto last year, he added a second eyelet, above the first, which I have found better stabilizes the instrument. I will have to measure tonight to give you a more precise idea of the location.

Yes, My Selmer has a good T R with ring [ Leblanc made good ones for their bass cls] and a second ring about 2-3 " up on the U J, so I can use either of my 2 hook straps to get good "stabilization". Now I'd like to have a "swan-neck" shaped barrel/neck [like the 80's Leblanc altos, but adjustable?] for greater head-position comfort. Any thots, Dave? Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

A good 'balance point' for locating a single strap ring on an alto or low-Eb bass clarinet is towards the bottom of the upper joint, about in line with the tonehole for the l.h. C#/G# key.
The downside of this arrangement is, if your center joint is very loose, you run the risk of having the lower joint and bell fall off --- but I'm sure nobody on this BB would allow their center joint to get THAT loose.
