 RE: The Value of Good Practice

Dear Anon;
I knew a fella, once upon a time, who played piano and organ. A fun guy to be around, as nice as anyone you'd care to meet. Played very well, except for one little 'problem' - he (I hope this is a correct term) 'broke meter'. That is, he would occassionally, unpredictably (and, to make matters worse, inconsistently) leave out a beat or add one. He was totally unaware that he was doing it, even when other musicians pointed it out to him. He just couldn't count and play music at the same time. Playing solo, he was fine - with other musicians, well, it was a problem. Not an insurmountable problem - he just didn't work with groups or play dance gigs.
Eventually he became an excellent instrument repairman and a very successful businessman (music store, of course). His piano playing was pretty good, and it was a delight to hear him play the organ. He sold lots of them.
There's no deep philosophical point or anything like that to this story. I just felt like sharing it with you, Anon.
