I have a surface crack on the upper joint of my clarinet about an inch long. How can I repair this? Is it possible to use clear nail polish?

I would not recommend nail polish. My favorite method is to mix some grenadilla powder with fast-drying clear epoxy and work the paste into the crack -- then filing/sanding/polishing the repair to blend it into the surrounding wood. It's a fair bit of work but if done right, the repair is invisible or very nearly so, and permanent.
