 Ab Clarinet info

As far as I know Leblanc is (was?) the only manufacturer of piccolo clarinets. Is that correct? and is there a name for it (ex: Eb clarinet is to eevfer as Ab clarinet is to _____)?

AFAIK the name for such a beast is "sopranino". As they never made it mainstream, there's no other nick for them.

You have to have really small fingers to play it well. Guys usually have a problem playing them.

I know about the finger problem XD. I can barely play an eefer. My fingers are better for playing contrabass.

If my memory serves, Ripamonti of Italy also makes the tiny beast.

Nasty little beasts ... why bother?

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Some authors (e.g. Shackleton) use "sopranino" to refer to D and Eb clarinets, and "piccolo" for high G and Ab clarinets.

I think Frank Hammerschmidt Klarinetten (http://www.frank-klarinetten.com/) used to advertise an Ab instrument on its web site, though now there's almost nothing there other than contact information. Orsi lists an Eb clarinet (http://www.orsi-wind-instruments.it/cl_speciali.htm) as do L. A. Ripamonti (http://www.laripamonti.com/instruments.html) and Schwenk und Seggelke (http://www.schwenk-und-seggelke.de/englisch/deutsch.php). Wolfgang Dietz lists a high G (http://www.dietz-klarinetten.de/dietz/default.php?group=Klarinetten&id=15).

I did own a LeBlanc Ab and was never very happy with it and finally sold it off. If you think the Eb has intonation problems then you should try this thing! Virtually every note had to be fudge-fingered. I've heard from a player in Europe that the Orsi is a much better horn, in tune with itself so my opinions may be biased.

The other thing I noted is that there is really a limited range on the instrument where the sound is at all pretty.

Other than a few odd pieces and some clarinet choir music there's not much call for it. I only played it in public ONCE! It is a good substitute for Eb on that miserable soli with the piccolo in the first movement of Shostakovich 5 (descending scale from high G) as those notes are more in tune on the Ab and in the best musical range on that horn.

The comments about the size of the instrument are appropriate too. I'm 6'3" and with large hands. The Eefer is no problem but the Ab was definitely pushing it for me.

How about that Orsi with a one piece body, from bell joint to mouthpiece with inserts at the top for tuning?

I have a Ripamonti Ab. It has similar, serious intonation problems.

Who makes reeds for this instrument? I'm supposing Eb reeds would be too big.
