Weber Intro, Theme and Var. notes?
Author: johng 2017

A student of mine is working on the Weber Introduction, Theme and Variations. According to the International Music score, this is Opus posthumous and "orginally for Clarinet and String Quartet". The editor is Stanley Drucker.

If someone has the quintet version, or a different publisher, I would appreciate some help with the cadenza at the end of Variation V. The 1st F is noted F# in the grace notes, but the piano score and the part differ about the F# going through the entire cadenza. Judging from the final chord in the piano at the beginning of the cadenza, it should be F natural the rest of the way, but the part is not marked that way and is unclear.

Any help?

The work listed as "Intro, Theme & Variations" by Weber is in fact the First Clarinet Quintet op.32, by Josef Küffner. Weber It was published by Costallat in 1815. If you want to find out more, see my article in "The Clarinet", Summer 1986, page 34.

Thanks for that information. I didn't know that. It is still a decent piece and my student is still playing it. Any ideas about the F#?

I have the arrangement for cl & strings published by Lienau, and the chord at the end of Variation V is F,C,Eb,F - no third (curious). I have searched for my copies of the "Weber" with piano and the Küffner original (with strings) but so far have not found them (it's over 20 years since I last looked at them). The little clarinet "cadenza" which follows the chord is based on the note G (sounding F) with grace notes A & F# (sounding G & E), so I don't see any problem, if you will excuse me for saying so.
It is interesting to note that the Küffner original was scored for clarinet, violin, 2 violas and cello, whereas the modern "Weber" edition is scored for clarinet plus the normal string quartet (the first viola part being transposed for the second violin).
