Can anyone recommend a brand or type of good black gloves to play clarinet in? Preferably one that already has the finger tips cut off (don't want to deal with possible fraying if I cut it myself). I need them to be solid black, and preferably warm!

Those are the gloves in mind. cutting the tips wouldn't have a fraying issue as the edges would have the coating to hold the end threads in place.

what about some tight/flexible leather ones with the tips cut off, and put ordinary wool/thinsulate type fingerless mittens over the top. You can probably find some with those flaps that button back over your fingers when you are not playing.

There's a plethora of fingerless mittens on the market. Mine are thinsulated and whatnot, and pitch black. Else buy cheap fleece gloves and cut the finger tips off (remove from hand first).
They won't fray, else seal the cut with your alcohol lamp or nail varnish.
Else buy a plateau-ed outdoors horn.

Hello,
I'm going to try something this year (tomorrow is the Army/Navy game--the coldest day of the year for Naval Academy [and I assume] Army Academy bandsmen). I'm going to buy surgical gloves and wear them under my white gloves (with the tips cut out) for extra layering. I'll let you know how it works, as tomorrow is supposed to be 30 degrees or so.

I wouldn't try surgical gloves - they don't insulate (for that, a fabric must store air or a gas as a temperature barrier), but you'd start sweating like hell. I'd buy cheap photo lab gloves to wear under the official gloves.
(and use some hand cream (eg Neutrogena's Norweigian Formula) - helps against cold fingers too)

In the West Point Band, we often played honor guards on Trophy Point, which overlooks the Hudson from several hundred feet up. You'd better believe it got mother COLD there in January, with the wind whistling down from Lake Ontario.
An honor guard is where you stand around for half an hour waiting for some VIP -- say, the dictator of Paraguay -- who eventually arrives, inspects the troops, gives a 20 minute speech in Spanish, with consecutive translation, and then his son makes a 20 minute speech with consecutive translation, at which point half the honor guarders have fainted, and the dictator starts to feel the cold coming through his long-johns, so he finally leaves, while you play toward the exhaust pipe of his limo.
We used white kid gloves with about half of each finger cut off, but they had no warmth at all. Then we got thin cotton gloves that had something like Saran wrap on the bottoms of the fingertips, making it possible to play without cutting off the tips. However, your hands still got so cold that you couldn't feel anything, and the skin on our fingertips was too stiff to cover the holes.
I finally got a pair of white wool gloves and worked the Saran-tipped gloves over them. I could barely move my fingers, but it was possible to play. At least I wasn't a brasshole. Their valves and slides froze immediately, and they all hyperventilated blowing through their instruments to defrost them (especially the Sousaphone players).
So -- get some relatively light knitted wool gloves and wear them under the thin black rubber/silicone gloves you have. The windproof rubber over the knitted wool make them windproof and with an air layer underneath, which should make the game just bearable.
And yes, Ben, I played 3 Army-Navy games with that setup.

Hello,
The surgical gloves worked great! I got them at the grocery store, so they're not as tight as real surgical gloves, but they did keep in the warmth that the body produces. Of course, I had another pair of gloves over them. Then, while sitting in the stands, I did an experiment. I took off the surgical gloves and only used the black gloves. My fingers did get cold. So, I put back on the surgical gloves with the black gloves and it really did work well. If the temperature were warmer (it was 34 degrees at the game) I might worry about sweating, which would be cold. But, in this temperature, it was great. I'll always throw in a pair of the latex gloves for extra warmth, if needed.

Thank you for the tips and thanks for trying out those surgical gloves Ben. Now I know what I can incorporate into my army wardrobe to help with the cold (like I said, I'll be playing plenty of middle of the night, outdoor gigs in the coming month and it'll be REALLY cold). Thanks all. Looks like I have a little shopping to do tomorrow.
