 John J. Moses in action?

I've been playing in a little Gypsy/Klezmer group, and they lent me a CD so that I could check out a Paul Simon tune done in Yiddish. The CD, entitled "Mamaloshen", features Mandy Patinkin, and has some very nice clarinet work all through. It should've been no surprise to find John J. Moses credited as one of five woodwind players.

John, is that you on all that fine clarinet work? The CD's copious notes don't tell much, and I didn't notice a mention of it on your website.

The album itself really isn't my cup of tea (no English spoken), but the orchestrations are very nice, and Patinkin's performance is passionate, if a little melodramatic. Lotsa good musical moments.

I'm particularly curious about "American Tune" which was the piece I was asked to check out.

The album is a real flavor experience, kinda like watching Hollywoodland and getting caught up in the period cars, locations, etc. Nonesuch 79479-2, if anyone is interested in checking it out.

The clarinet gets a lot of space and the player (or players) involved should probably at least be mentioned.

Hey Allen
Just out of curiosity, who are the rest of the reed players?

Thanks Allan, I was indeed the main clarinet soloist on Mandy's CD, featuring his most favorite Yiddish tunes from "Mamaloshen."

The other woodwind players were:

Lawrence Feldman, Alto sax, flute & Piccolo
Me, clarinet, Alto sax
Rick Heckman, Tenor sax, oboe & EH
Dave Tofani, Tenor sax, flute & clarinet
John Campo, Bari, Bass clarinet & Bassoon

The sessions were highly emotional for all of us. Mandy was very committed to doing this CD for many personal reasons. He brought great talent & angst to all the dates. He thanked us all profusely at the end, and broke down and cried...very touching for any artist.

"American Tune" is a song by Paul Simon (of Simon & Garfunkel). Mandy had it translated into Yiddish by his friend, and on site Yiddish mentor, Henry Sapoznik. Doug Besterman did the orchestrations, and is a giant in that field.

All in all, it was a great experience...one to be remembered. Thanks for reminding me to give a fresh, new listen.

Very interesting. I'll have check out the CD booklet a bit further before I return it. Oddly enough, "American Tune" was on "There Goes Rhymin' Simon", the first album I ever purchased. I never reallly connected with that particular cut, although I spent hours and hours trying ape the guitar and piano work from "Kodachrome", "One Man's Ceiling", and "Something So Right."

The emotional intensity on this Mandy Patinkin album certainly reflects what John has related here, and the CD will make you feel like you're listening to a live performance. I'm gonna try to get a copy of my own.
