help - hurt hand concert coming up
Author: janlynn

i dont know what to do. i had planned on practicing A LOT today. I havent played for a few days and today the pain is too bad (only when i play)

i have been having some pain in my thumb (knuckle?) furthest away from the nail more towards the wrist. down to the wrist. i ice it and that usually helps. well, today the pain was too bad. even after icing, i just couldnt play. i NEED to practice. i have a 3 hour dress rehearsal on tuesday and a concert on saturday. i dont know what to do!ive never not been able to manage my pain with icing. i wrote to my director, clarinet teacher and principle clarinetist for advice but have not heard back yet. im also worried that this might be a chronic problem and lead to the end of my playing for which i would be devestated.

Stop playing now and go see a doctor. It can be number of things and the first thing you need to do is rest. It is better to miss this concert than to do permanent damage to your arm.

Once your physician figures out what the problem is and clears you to play again, there are many things you can do to your clarinet to help relieve stress from your thumb/hand. My recommendations are:
1- move the thumbrest up and get something that opens up the hand like the Ridenour thumb saddle
2- Use a neckstrap.

Most importantly, you need to rest your thumb and see a doctor as soon as possible.

Icing is a temporary measure to ease inflammation. It is not a cure. you are already risking permanent damage to your hand by continuing. You need professional help NOW!

To heck with any rehearsals -get to a doctor night away. You may have already ruined your career. there is no suggestion possible via the Board for such chronic pain.
