This is amazing. I sat down planning to just skim over the table of contents and see if I'd like to read any of it later, and I ended up reading 35 pages without even realizing it. Thanks for the link!

This, along with Shannon Thompson's dissertation on Daniel Bonade, are must-reads for any clarinet performance major (past, present, or future). Two terrific contributions to the literature.
BTW, I have a copy of a graduate research project about A. R. McAllister and the fantastic Joliet Township Band. There are some really astounding stories out there and the treatise on Hasty joins the list.

Mags,
I bought my copy from University Microfilms and it was not that expensive. However, if you have a relationship of some kind (alumni, former faculty, current student. etc.) with a university, the library at that school can usually get teh dissertation via inter-library loan. This dissertation was from University of Texas and Shannon is at Western Carolina University.
Here is a link http://www3.wcu.edu/~thompson/ and Chapter 1 is there. Her dissertation is really terrific.
