A few months ago I purchased a pair of Barklee clarinets in the key of A on Ebay. They were made in 1947 especially for the New York public school system. I had one of them restored and the repairperson said that it was a fine clarinet, equivalent to any professonal model manufactured today. It has a nice open sound.
I would love to hear from anyone who has the same model and compare notes. I love this clarinet - and I have a relatively new Buffet R13 that now rests in its shadow.

The instruments are undoubtedly "stencils" -- i.e., instruments made by a large manufacturer without a trademark and sold to a supplier for resale with a made-up trademark.
If you can post some photos, it may be possible to identify the manufacturer by details of the keywork.

Kal Opperman mentioned Barklee clarinets in an interview in The Clarinet a few years ago....I seem to recall he said they were made in New York. He played one for a long time; he really like it but it finally wore out. I wish I could find the magazine article, I know it's here somewhere.......

Ok I found the article. It's in the May-June 1995 issue of The Clarinet.
Mr. Opperman said his brother George worked at the factory where the Barklee clarinets were made; on West 8th Street in New York City. He said that his Barklee was one of the best clarinets he ever played.

The little information I've found on the web is that indeed, Barklee clarinets were made in New York and the company was bought by LeBlanc. I gather that they did not make very many clarinets. My pair are serial numbers 930 and 931.
I've seen a number of Barklee Bb clarinets sell on Ebay for pennies, so I imagine that they made several levels of instruments.
