I'm going to be performing "The Shepherd on the Rock" in a couple of weeks and would like to provide some background information on the piece to the audience. Can anyone out there help? Thanks.

Der Hirt auf dem Felsen was written for the berlin Court Opera singer, Anna Milder, whom he admired quite a lot. She requested a song that would represent different emotions and would have a brilliant ending. Three years later he sent her this song and is possibly the last work Schubert wrote. The soprano enters with the words, "When I stand on the highest rock, looking down into the valley and singing and singing..." The brilliant ending she requested begins with the words, "Spring will come, Spring my joy." More detailed notes can be found on the jacket liner of "Music from Marlboro" featuring Harold Wright and Rudolf Serkin. Notes are from David Johnson
