Based on many recommendations by previous posters, I purchased a copy of Baermann Third Division , for better or worse I have the one edited by Langenus. On page six there is a note at the top: " Broken Chord Passages through all the keys with three different kinds of strokes."No futher explanatin, in addition on this page a symbol appears, a star followed by a line leading to a small triangle with a dot in the middle of the triangle, this symbol is used quite often in the book. Perhaps it was defined in Division one or two.
Looking for an explanation of the symbol and the three different strokes comment. Thanks.

David,
Based on the placement of these symbols, I take them as "leave right hand down". I play out of this book daily, although I've never paid too much heed to these "mysterious symbols" haha.
Happy Practicing!

There are a few symbols and numbers retained in the Baermann/Langenus editions (Carl Fischer)
The *(star) leading to a triangle with a dot inside indicates a suggestion where right hand fingers are to remain on the holes and/or keys. It begins at the star and ends at the triangle.
If I remember correctly (probably only in Baermann 4 and 5), you may also see the symbol of two vertical stars. That indicates a suggestion to swap pinky keys for the same note.
There is also the symbol of a tiny open headed eighth note placed above the staff. It is a suggestion of a place for a breath.
The numbers used for fingering suggestions refer to the Fritzsche fingering chart ...GBK
