Okay so I understand the whole Long Facing, Closed tip=harder reed and vice versa. what if you have a short and closed like the the fobes cicero 14 at 16mm and 1.08mm? would a V12/FOF reed work well with a short faced mouthpiece? if so what strength? or would the regular vandorens/RC Gonzalez work better, and if so what strength?

First of all 1.08mm opening is medium not closed but 16mm is short facing. I've played on Grabner personal SW1 which is about 17mm long facing and has 0.98 opening which is very closed opening. For me I liked Gonzalez FOF on that piece but I didn't like V-12 at all and just so you know then V-12 is a little bit longer faced than FOF. Well I think from what I've played on and tried that the facing lenght affects more for me than the opening. I notice a bit difference between Grabner SW1 (0.98mm opening and 17mm facing) and his Kaspar 14(1.08mm opening and around 18-19mm facing) but keep in mind that Grabner only list the aprox. opening the Kaspar 14 being 1.06-1.08mm and then the facing is eather medium=Kaspar 14,medium short= Kaspar 13 and 11 SW2 and AW personal and short=SW1 and Chicago. When I moved from SW1 to Kaspar14 I notice that I wanted a little bit more resistance in my setup so I switched from Gonzalez FOF which I find very flexible but take longer time to brake in than many other brands over to Glotin GIII which I got very cheap from a store discontinuing them. The give me a bit more recistance due to the cut and the facing is also longer (that is from the barknot the scrap). But I use the same strenght of reeds on both of this mouthpieces and I still use FOF sometimes to get more powerfull sound. I also have played on Morgan with 1.15mm opening just with the same strenght of reeds. It all depends on how easy they are to control and how flexible they are. That's why I changed from SW1 over to Kaspar14 because I found the SW1 lacking in flexibillity.
One thing I've never understood is why Grabner reccomends V-12 reeds on all of his mouthpieces when I didn't find many playable V-12 reeds on the SW1 but a lot of playable reeds on both the AW and Kaspar14 I just think that the SW1 has too short facing for the V-12 reeds.
Some people like to find mouthpiece to match their preferred type of reed I always try few types of reeds(preferable different facing lengths rather than just different cuts) to find the best match. So before people say that this or that type of reed is bad they should ask themselve if they are using proper type of reed for the mouthpiece they are playing on. Just as an example then I always found long faced reeds as V-12 work really well on Bay mouthpieces but FOF Gonzalez not when I've found FOF to work extreamly well on the Zinner based mouthpieces.
