Dan Wakin, who wrote the article, is himself a fine clarinetist (he once sat in with The NY Philharmonic and lived to write about it).

I remember that article. Easily one of the most fascinating newspaper articles I've ever read. The article I read this morning on Rostropovich was also very nice.
