Bonade inverted ligature & scratches

I know you cannot eliminate scratching the mouthpiece with the Bonade ligature, what to do? Tape, the back? What type of tape to use, and will it effect my tone?

I have heard/seen black electrical tape, maskings tape, mouthpiece patches, band aids. Some choiuces are cfertainly UGLIER than others. Of course, a badly scratched mouthpiece doesn't get to looking any nicer either. mw

The ligature scratching problem can be greatly reduced by removing the ligature screws, and using a round burnishing tool (i.e. the smooth part of a 3/16" or slightly smaller twist drill bit) to remove/re-form the burred edge of the ligature opening and roll the edges of the opening slightly away from the mouthpiece. This has worked nicly for me on several ligatures, It seems like all the new ones have a few rough edges. The burnishing technique also can be used on the opening of your mouthpiece cap if it is a little rough. Follow up this work with a little sanding with your ultra-fine sandpaper (600-1000 grit wetordry) just on the edge, not on the flat parts; you don't want to scratch the nice chrome plating on these parts.
