 REED REED REED help
Author: antonwebern

Yo
I recently got a new mouthpiece and i've been having trouble finding the right reed. Its a fairly open Chuck Bay, but not so open that I can comfortably play a 3.5. I'm not a huge fan of reeds with fat heels (like v12s, Gonzalez FOF, Rue Lepic, though i'm using these now in a 3.5+... they sound good but warp and get weird) as I find they get warpy and squeaky easily. Besides regular vandorens, what reeds do you guys find to be most consistent, easily playable, etc.? And I like filing my reeds...
Also, I recently got a Legere (I know... sellout/lame-o) for my bass and it plays extremely well (though lacking certain pleasant overtones that cane reeds have). Have you legere users had good experience with their Bb models? Flexible enough sound? Not too dead?

thanks alot

I find that Zonda reeds work well for me. Similar to Gonzales, but work better for me. They come in substrengths. Once I got zeroed in on the proper substrength for me, they are pretty consistent

I use Legere 3.0-3.5 reeds on my CXBS mouthpiece (Grabner discontinued model) and my Buffet Prestige Low C bass clarinet. For sopranos, I like the VD Trad cut 3.5 on my Kaspar #14 and my Ithica Bay. Tried most of the rest, but I'm over them. There's nothing like a good VD (and nothing quite so frustrating as a bad one).

BTW--as I mentioned in another thread, I just received two Legere Eb clar reeds (2.75 & 3.5) that I very much like. Using a Bay M-O-M custom mpc on a pro Yamaha effer and with a Winslow lig, they play and sound just like my VD cane reeds (cut down Bb V12s, 3,5)

I still prefer the sound I get from Vandorens, but you ask about consistancy and I've never found reeds more consistant (i.e. very similar reeds on the box) than Gonzalez (which is one of the reasons I don't use them).
