Has anyone else had tmj-like jaw problems because of playing the clarinet? If so what did you do? Did you have to quit? Is there anything that you can change about your embochure to make it better?

Hi, I have TMJ problems and I play the clarinet... whether its caused by the clarinet I'm not sure, but I suspect it is at least aggravated by the clarinet.
I've started learning to play with a double-lip embouchure to reduce biting, and have been searching for the mouthpiece-reed combination with the least resistance possible. Also learning Alexander technique, to take control of bad habits like teeth grinding & jaw clenching. This for me has been very positive so far.
I don't think (for me at least) there is a need to quit the clarinet, but problems like this should be taken seriously because they could easily get worse.

I have similar problems. clarinet is not the only factor but it's one of them.
Use the search function; we discussed this in depth about 2 months ago.

There is a great book on the market by Larry Guy
Embouchure Building for Clarinetist
It addresses many problems and offers great insight into the correct embouchure for the clarinet. Good luck'
