Hi!
I'm currently tutoring the clarinet section of a community band which i used to play with, and the clarinet section is made up of 7 girls, all aged between 9 and 12. Theyre really good kids and pick up the music really fast, but i was wondering whether anybody had any ideas i hadnt thought of for warmup/break from working on pieces kind of games? Some ones ive used are
- passing the note around the group- matching tone, tuning, and volume once they got the hang of it
-passing the rhythm- works really well with tricky rhythms in pieces cos they get to copy each other and me
- musical "Im going on a trip and im taking a...."- first person plays a note, second person plays that same note plus another of their own, third person plays the first two notes plus another...works on ears too
Anybody else have any that are tried and true/random ideas?

I think including some type of improvisation will be great. Opening their minds from an early age. I get a little sad when some amazingly high level players when asked to improvise are either automatically clueless, or just play an "improvisation" which is actually very similar to things they already know (i.e. not really an improvisation).
Since I assume they are mostly beginners it is probably not good to just tell "improvise" and throw them into the water. Maybe you can start with some things determined in advance, like only use 5 notes, or only one scale and only quarter notes, etc. This can get more and more "complicated" (i.e. less controlled by you and more of their free choice) the higher their level.
