Years ago I used to buy Vandoren German facing reeds in a purple box. Does anyone know if the Black box Vandorens are the same facing as the old german facing reeds. What is the difference between the White box and the Black Box Vandoren reeds?

The old "German" cut Vandoren reeds weren't. After a pow-wow with Leister they began the production of the White Master in its place.
From what I remeber those reeds were a very bizarre cut. They were the same width of the French cut at the heel and just went straight up (no taper). They may have worked for some folks but there are better alternatives these days in the Rue Lepic and V12.

What's the difference in the German and Austrian. I know the German had a cross cut at the back of the heart and the French didn't (I hope I'm discribing it correctly), but I've never played, much less seen an Austrian cut.

Austrian cut reeds are bigger and don't fit on an "Wurlitzur" style horn. I assume they are meant for "Hammershmidt" style horns.
