Hi: I see a posting for a Prueffer Ultima Clarinet. I haven't seen this type mentioned on the board. If anyone has feedback, I'd appreciate it very much. I have a Bundy and only want to purchase another clarinet if it's an upgrade.

Pruefers are not much of an upgrade from Bundys, I'm afraid. I've messed around with a few of them and none was better than OK.

Tho I own, and sometimes play, an old Pruefer [single-bodied] wood, a "19/7" which lacks only the low Eb, being a 3/4ths Full Boehm, I don't greatly disagree with D S's characterization. Mine prob dates back to at least the late 1940s, when it appears that the several small USA mfgrs ceased competing with French makers [after WW II]. Mine was well restored by John Butler and it graces my display board most of its renewed life. As to your Ultima, Cindy, I'd suggest a tryout/inspection [likely needs some repair] and to not pay a high price, based only on name. Luck, Don

I haven’t seen a decent pruefer clarinet but some of the mouthpieces that came equipped with those clarinets have very good potential. If you see a pruefer, the mouthpiece is probably the best part of the horn and it could be worth a small investment. But like most antique mouthpieces, they often require a good restoration.

Thank you all, the asking price is $100.00, and it sounds like it would need some work due to age, etc. Since what I really am looking for is an intermediate clarinet, which I think I can get for $350 to $450, I think I'll pass on this one, Cindy.

Cindy - Brad's point is excellent advice [he's one of the very best mp makers/refacers], so can you arrange a tryout of this cl AND/OR its mp [s?], looking for "the diamond in the ruff"?? Its also possible the Pr is [or may be tweaked into] a good intermediate. I recently took an old Selmer Signet 100 [USA] off the hands of our local music store, and with a few hours of repairing/restoring, I have a competitor to my prized Sel CT for my favor. Its "darker/mellower" than any of my others !, just dont know why, but I like it. Much luck, Don
