Krommer Op. 86 - Score and Parts
Author: Mario Poirier
Date:   2007-01-03 00:31

My orchestra, the OCO, would like to feature Krommer Clarinet Concerto Op. 86 in E minor in its concerto competition final in April (http://www.ottawachamberorchestra.ca/ConcertoCompetition/.

We have tried to find orchestral parts and score for this work, looking at various editors for Krommer's work (Musica Rara, Kuzelmann), the ICA library in Maryland, to no avail.

We have an excellent student who could be finalist in our competition should we find what we need for the orchestra.

Help required: Where can we borrow/buy/rent orchestral parts and score for Krommer Clarinet Concerto in E minor Op. 86?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hey! I get to help someone!

www.musicarara.com

In the search field (top right), enter Krommer

When the search results come up, there will be 4 pages. Go to the 2nd page. Viola!

$22.25 plus a little over 3 bucks for shipping.

You said you couldn't find it there, but I just checked for you. It's on their list.

Cheers!

That is the well known piano/clarinet reduction.

The original question asked for the complete orchestral set (parts).

Musica Rara has been bought by Breitkopf. Here is the e-mail I got from them a few days ago, before I started this thread:

The Clarinet Concerto op. 86 by Krommer was part of the Musica Rara
catalogue, that Breitkopf obtained a couple of years ago. When we took over
the performance material of this work we had to state that this was in a
very bad shape and incomplete. Therefore we could not other, but had to
withdraw orchestral parts and full score from our catalogue.

We are very sorry for not being of help.

From the ICA mailing list (where I also posted my question), I got info to the effect that:

Krommer OP. 86 is actually a flute concerto adapted later for the A clarinet. I am trying to track down a flute version to see if the orchestral parts remained the same.

I also go info to the effect that this concerto might - just might - be available in the National Library of Australia.

This is held by numerous libraries, including McGill and U of Calgary. Do a search in worldcat.org and see if your local library can get it by Interlibrary Loan.

Actually, only piano reduction score and the solo part are available in these universities, as well as in the US universities we checked. They all list "Musica Rara" as publisher of the score.

But Bennet's comment prompted me to change tack. Our student will only play movement #1. We have easy legit access to piano reduction score. We will simply produce the parts for Movement 1 from the score. We are talking here of a concerto of the classical period, scored for 5 string voices + timpani. We have one month between auditions and first rehearsal, and plenty of students looking for a bit of work. No big deal.

It looks like we have a solution.

I wonder if Breitkopf could take issue with Copyrights, etc. Considering that nobody will get paid and that all the performance will be done on a volunteer basis, and considering that they had "first right of refusal", we will manage this issue if it comes up (this last paragraph is for Mark's benefit - as you know, Mark is very particular with Copyrights, as he should).

It's pretty easy to deal with ... find a score published before 1927 and use it as your base (to be 100% safe), use any true urtext (Krommer's original is way out of copyright, only non-obvious editing could be considered copyrightable), or get permission from Breitkopf. There are forms available from the MPA site to request such.

Dear Friends:

I got it! I have in my possession a PDF version of the full orchestral score, e-mailed for free to me by a legitimate company owning the score. I obtained in writing full legal rights to produce parts for a single public performance on April 22nd. I will keep the identity of this operation confidential in order not to create a precedent and not to have thousands of clarinetists trying to get the same preferential treatment from this very well-known source of classical music.

I also learned that this work should be back in the catalog within the next year or so.

My students are ready to go. We will produce real actual parts from this orchestral score and be in business in no time.

This is a God send. Additional web input showed me that the piece was actuallly composed for a substantial wind section + strings (I was wrong to assume a purely string original orchestration). Looking at the full score, rearranging from a piano reduction would have been problematic - pure hell.

Interestingly, I have yet to hear a recording (although I have the Musica Rara piano reduction). The Conservatoire has the Leister's recording. I will get to it pretty soon.

Thomas, if you happen to read this post, many thanks again. This is what I call customer service!

And many thanks to all of you who helped and provided advice and guidance.

This might be the first time in North-America that Krommer Op. 86 will be played in a real concert with full orchestra, and probably one of the very few instances of same in the world. Our clarinet student (Roxanne Léveillé) is one of the best wind players to emerge out of our community for a long time. This will ge good. I will let you know the results of the competition and Roxanne's place after the finals on April 22nd.
