Buffet A Clarinet age/serial number help
Author: Clarinetgirl06

I'm looking at an A Buffet Clarinet serial number 1614**. I checked the Buffet website and nothing came up. I looked on the woodwind.org main site and I saw that 1614** is either 1975 or 1976. Does this count for A clarinets or this only Bb?

What we be a good buying price for a horn that is in good condition with no cracks from the 1614** serial range? Anyone have any insight on this vintage of Buffet A clarinets?

Any help would be muchly appreciated!

If it plays well, and the pads are under five years of age - $1300?

If it is in a music store, they'll undoubtedly want more.

If the pads are older (they should be uniform in color) deduct the cost of an overhaul, at the going local rate.

If the keys are worn, with some plating loss bargain down $25 per key.
(Not that it will affect the play-ability.)

I have an R13 A serial 166** purchased in 1976. Its beautifully made with a bore so smooth it looks like it could be glass. I have never found a better R13 A (in fact its better than my R13 Bb which is 288** from the late 80s).

If it plays nicely and the intonation is OK then go for it - even if it needs an overhaul - you will almost certainly end up with a better instrument at lower cost than buying new.

At the top of this page, there's a set of index tabs. Go to the one marked "Equipment" and you'll find a list of Buffet serial numbers with the dates.

Right, I've looked at the serial numbers already, I was just confused if it counts as A clarinets too, just not Bb. For some reason, in my mind, I imagine there being less A clarinets being produced than Bb, making the numbers off of each other.

At least, Bb, A and Eb clarinets are all intermingled on the same list. Also, I think it applies to all Buffet's professional lines -- R13, RC, S1, R13 Vintage, et al. I suspect, but do not know from personal observation, that it also includes the few C and D clarinets they have produced over the years. It does not include bass clarinets, which are on the "harmony clarinet" list. I don't know which other clarinets are on the harmony list, possibly altos, bassett horns and contrabasses?

Best regards,
jnk
