Are there competitions to enter a jr high person in? Like IMEA or solo competitions? I'm in high school and have competed but I never did any in middle school and I have two students who are interested in competing. Anybody know?
Thanks!

Well I don't know about round the country but in SC, 7th and 8th graders can go for AllState (or rather that is what we call it. It's really Regionals)

In Texas, 7th and 8th graders can try out for the All - Region Junior High Band. I've done Solo and Ensemble all 3 years in middle school (I'll be a freshman (fishy fishy) this fall). Here S & E is more of a if your band director want to take students to S & E kind of thing.

back in the early devonian period (1960's) the Ohio MEA had solo and ensemble competitions for junior high (7,8) and high school (9-12) divisions. The junior high folks, could enter the high school division with the approval of their director or teacher.
I'm not convinced that solo and ensemble competition is a good thing for younger musicians. I think there should be more opportunities for younger musicians to play chamber music and solo literature in a public "convention or festival" setting where the playing is non-competitively evaluated....
