I need to buy an Eb clarinet, and can't buy a "top-of-the-line" model. Any thoughts on the Buffet E-11? Is it good enough to play in an orchestra, or to audition with? (yes, I've tried the search function). Any opinion/advice is welcome.

I would suggest that whatever you buy, leave room at the top of your budget to get it properly tweeked by a good repair person. A great clarinet in poor repair will not be as good as a mediocre clarinet in excellent repair.
Alternatively, can you hire one? Perhaps you know someone who owns one and isn't using it for a few months and would be pleased to make some money by renting it to you. This would mean that if you turn out not to need it in a few months you haven't invested in something needlessly, or if you do need one, you are used to playing an eefer and are perhaps in a better decision to find that 'great' instrument.
If you do purchase one it might be wise to go second hand so that if you sell it on there is less depreciation. Although good luck finding a second hand one!

Mags, the E11 Eb is, in my experience, an excellent instrument. I have a student who has owned one for over a year now and we find it to be every bit as good as some "pro" instruments. By sheer coincidence I discussed this with Francois Kloc this past Sunday and he confirmed my evaluation -- saying that Gene Mondie, Eb clarinet with the National Symphony, liked it better than his Selmer! Incedentally it has in-line trill keys -- looks more like a Leblanc than a Buffet -- Francois says this is for manufacturing economies.
