i read somewhere that it used to be and in some places is still common to use lemon oil to oil your clarinets. would using a household product like holloway house be a good oil for your bore?

Do a search on bore oil and go to a desert island for a couple of years to read the breadth and depth of the discussions posted over time about oiling, pros - cons, formulations, and theory!! IMHO - an oil which approximates the oil present in Grenadilla wood or and oil which manufacturers use to impregnate the wood before manufacture would be the best bet.

I use Formby's lemon oil as a first step in cleaning both the wood and metal on clarinets....but step two is to treat the wood with a proper bore oil such as Doc's. I have had no adverse results with this procedure.

Im also not selling anything but I use "Leblanc Bore Seal, Bore Oil" on my buffet. Its only 1.25 fluid Oz. but it goes a long way.

The Doctor's bore oil is wonderful stuff.
If you're going to oil your instrument, use a professionally designed product, made especially for woodwind instruments. Click the sponsor's link to find his web site.
Or use a cheap common household product on you expensive baby, and risk permanently damaging it.

I have evaluated every "bore oil" that I can get my hands on being sold in the marketplace. Just a reality check - if it is clear and colorless it is most probably mineral oil. IMO mineral oil is not good for Grenadilla wood long term.

The issue is not whether or not someone is selling anything, but whether they have any expertise about the topic. If you search all posts by Omar Henderson on bore oil, you will find expertise that is probably many hundreds of times more than the average writer in this forum.

ALL bore oil goes a long way. And it is all marketed in small containers. Neither of those are relevant to whether it does harm or good to a clarinet.
