 Old Buffet C Clarinet
Author: elmo lewis

A student came today with a Buffet C clarinet with a wrap-around register key, serial no. 235Z from 1907. It looks like it has never been used. The barrel is the same size as a Bb barrel and the horn played a quarter step flat but when I tried a barrel from a junk C clarinet the intonation was okay. Is it possible that an instrument from 1907 would play at A440 with the right barrel-mouthpiece combination? If so, could anyone recommend someone who could make a barrel for this horn and could this be done by mail or would the barrel maker have to have the instrument? Symphonie Fantastique is coming up in January and I would love to play it on this horn.
