I've done a bit of a search on these boards and it seemed that the general consensus was not liking the show "Annie", but can anybody tell me anything about alto sax parts in the show? Ive been asked to play clarinet, bari and alto sax, and im fairly comfortable with show music on the first two but my alto playing isnt as comfortable. Any scary solos?

The original Broadway orchestration was:
Reed 1: Flute, alto flute, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone
Reed 2: Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone
Reed 3: Clarinet, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Reed 4: Piccolo, flute, alto flute [optional], clarinet, alto saxophone
Reed 5: Flute, clarinet, baritone saxophone [optional]
I assume you've been given the Reed 2 book, without the flute parts.
Get the OBC recording of ANNIE and listen carefully to the solo wind parts.
There are solos in all the 5 Reed books, so get your book in time to learn the parts you've heard,
Good luck,

I did this same part back at Easter (reed 2) - not too much exposed alto playing in this chair, but you will have a lot of low and quiet bari playing underneath the other instruments - so get your bari chops in order.
Some clarinet solos in this part are in 5 sharps (concert A) - I used an A clarinet for these as they're not easy to get around unless you either have a LH Ab/Eb key, or transpose them up a semitone on A clarinet which puts them all in a much better key - the fluent key of C major on an A clarinet as opposed to the ridiculous key of B major!

The show is light on sax as these things go. Most of the saxophone stuff is sectional in nature. However, there are a couple of "exposed" (as in "You need to play this out strong or it will sound horrible!") in the "Little Girls" number.
Other than that, make sure that you can play the many "train music" scene changes in sync with your section mates. I've played productions where the train parts started out slow in rehearsal, and ended up "presto" by the end of the run.
It's not one of my favorites, but it does have its occasional moments. There's one number in the second act that was fun to play, but I'll be damned if I can remember which one.

Funny thing when I did 'Annie' was that I was asked by one of the best clarinettists I know of in the area to dep for him as he didn't play flute (so I was very honoured to be asked by someone of that calibre!) - another time I worked with him was on 'Anything Goes' where he played the flute parts on C clarinet, and when we did 'Oliver' if there were any unison bass clarinet/cor anglais bits we'd split them so the two of us played alternate notes (he was on bass clar. and I did oboe/cor).
If you can, pat the dog if it comes near you.

Theres a dog? Oh thats so cool :P Closest ive come to that is having live chickens on the stafe during the wedding reception of "Fiddler on the Roof" (one of them laid an egg in the green room!).
Thanks guys- the clarinet in 5 sharps doesnt really worry me that much, nor does the quiet bari...just glad to hear that there's not too much super-exposed sax

Terry, you made me recall an alto [or sop?] sax part, as a sort of an intro-characterization of that "bad, no-goodnick, father-pretender" guy, a jazzy, lip-slur 3-4 bar solo, had fun with it ! Quite a few years back. Help, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
