 Upper notes
Author: timtin66

Hi All:

I have been practicing everything above upper C. Awhile back I could not even hit these notes, and now things are improving (i.e. fingering, inotation, etc.).

But

For some reason when I go from upper Eb to E, I stall. If I stop I can play the note, but I cannot slur to it. My horn does not squeak it just hollows out, and you can hear the air inside.

Tried going slow, tried new mouthpiece, tried different reeds????????????????????

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest practicing overtones. Play E for example and then slur up to high C# without changing the fingers. You should be able to start on E and just go up chromatically. E, F, F#, G, G#, A, etc. this will produce high C#, D, D#, E, F, F# The harmonics are produced with the fingerings of the lower notes....oral cavity does the work. ....tongue position.

If you're talking about just going from third ledger line Eb to E natural, my guess would be that there is a "seal" problem with the cup just above the LH second finger. Play the E, then take your right hand and alternately depress and release that cup (may take some looking before you play to get it right). If there is any audible difference in the E when you exert pressure with the RIGHT, then there is some leak. Perhaps the ring is just too low - easy fix. Just place finger (or something wooden) under the ring and depress the cup slightly to bend it down.

If the problem is just a worn/torn pad - have it replaced.
