Okay sports fans, if you could have only five drill books for the clarinet, which ones would you get? More importantly, why would you select these books? Let's keep the game fair by selecting books that are still available in print.
I'll start the game.
Playing level: Adult novice
Books:
1. Albert's 24 Scales for the Clarinet
A great way to learn the major and melodic scales. Nice arpeggio drills.
2. Langenus, Book 1
Almost the same as Rubank Advanced book 1. Many of the drills are exactly the same in both books. Okay, I cheated by putting two books into one slot, but I believe both are very good.
3. Baermann III, as edited by Hite
Classic studies here, but not as high in the nosebleed section as the original Baermann III
4. Langenus, Book 2
See Rubank Advanced Book 2 and my comments above.
Okay, I could only come up with four books, and a tie for two of them between different authors.
So, anyone else out there ready to play the game?

I'm afraid there's no way I could limit the list to a meager 5 books. But here's what I feel essential.
For scales, I'd have to list three books. The first would be Baermann III, but the second one which is quite similar is the Rudolph Jettel "Klarinettenschule" Book 2. They are basically very similar, except that the Jettel goes into the high Bb's and C's unlike the modern revisions of the Baermann. The other one would have to be the J. Albert 24 scales. It's a good quick and relatively painless warm-up book. If you can do the whole book in 30 minutes, you know your scales.
So there's three.
For technique, the Langenus and Klosé books are good. Also the Opperman series of modern studies is quite good as well.
I'm not a big fan of the Rubank series, even though I use it as a supplement to teaching my junior high students.
So, there's another three if I count the Langenus and Opperman as one instead of a set of three in and of themselves.
For interpretation and musical expression, I feel the Rose 32 are absolutely necessary. In relation to the David Hite (So. Music) edition of the Rose books, I feel the 40 etudes included are more for facility than expression.
For more modern (and very difficult) studies in style, technique and expression, the Jean-Jean 25 Etudes are very good. The Jettel Accomplished Clarinetist and the Preliminary Studies to it are also good, but shouldn't be done until a higher level of proficiency is attained.
I'm also a firm believer in playing orchestral excerpts or buying full parts and playing the whole pieces. Not only does it help sightreading, but if one is aiming at a career in performing, it adds to the knowledge of the repertoire and put one ahead of the game a little.
But just as valuable as etudes and scales and excerpts, buying recordings and going to live concerts from quality groups is another aid. I have a fair size collection of CD's (for a college kid with little money). But after dating a person with a record collection of over 10,000 LP'sand 78's, I've blown the dust off the old turntable on my parent's stereo and started buying quality, good condition records for usually less than $1.00 and they sound just as good as cd and usually better than cassette. And with an MD recorder, I can digitally record the records that will be played alot more often to preserve the vinyl and still have a good recording for less over-all than buying a CD of the exact same recording (assuming it has been re-released on CD).
