[ Unless you have ACTUAL experience with this product, do not post. We do not need any further debate concerning value vs quality or speculation about how it may or may not play - GBK ]

I gave my opinion on another thread, but I'll repeat it here.
I have been playing on Hawkins mouthpieces for quite a few years - ever since Richard was a student at Michigan, and would visit us and work on our mouthpieces for very cheap (a great experience - he would work on the mouthpiece, we'd play it and say "it's a little stuffy in the lower register - he would take it back and tweak it until we were happy!) I have 4 or 5 mouthpiece that Richard made or ones that he resurfaced for me. I have nothing bad to say about Hawkins mouthpieces - they play very, very well, and many terrific players use and recommend them.
About 5 months ago I was preparing for a big audition, and I found myself wishing that my mouthpiece was just a tad more open. Sometimes I felt like I just couldn't get as much air through it as I would like, although I loved how articulate and responsive it was. I already had a Backun barrel (which I LOVE), so I ordered a few Backun / Morales mouthpieces on trial. I ended up choosing an "Orchestra" model. It has a giant sound, very round and full. I am able to play very soft and very loud with it, and it is quite articulate and agile. I believe it to be the best mouthpiece I have ever played (and yes, I did a bunch of blind playing tests with it for friends and colleagues- all were 100% in agreement).
I am not the type of person who would spend $500 on the latest gadget, and don't consider myself an equipment freak. I usually stick with a set-up for a long time before re-evaluating it. The Backun mouthpiece (IMHO) is that good. It's worth the money. As I stated before, your mileage may vary. It would be a boring world if there was one "correct" mouthpiece or reed, or barrel, or clarinet.

I've been playing on a Backun/Morales for nearly a year and got it via a blind test. My teacher handed it to me one lesson and said try this out and that was the last time he got to touch it. He went back to the shop, picked out a new one for himself and I paid for it. I have not a clue what model it is and there isn't even a serial number on it. However, as far as I'm concerned it was a bargain.
A great teacher gives you answers to questions
you don't even know you should ask.
