 Gershwin Three Preludes
Author: JBHart

Hi,
I'm trying to get ahold of Don Sebesky's arrangement of the Gershwin Three Preludes for clarinet and orchestra. Does anyone know who the publisher is, if it has even been published? I have a recording of it by Stoltman and have heard it performed by Manasse.
Thanks,
J

If you are specifically looking for the orchestral version Richard Stoltzman performed on the "Concerto" CD, you may have difficulty -- though perhaps Michael Norsworthy can find out something of its availability from Richard Stoltzman.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a clarinet and piano version, you are likely in better luck. The clarinet and piano version that Richard Stoltzman did on "Amber Waves" was arranged by Jay Gach (and this is probably what Don Sebesky orchestrated) and is available in the Richard Stoltzman "Songbook" published by Carl Fischer. The copyright info with the work seems to indicate that Gach's version was originally copyrighted by Warner Bros. Music in 2001.

Perhaps you have heard Jon Manasse perform the Sebesky arrangement live with orchestra. The version he recorded, however, was by James Cohn. Manasse has also recorded two Concertos and a Sonata by Cohn. Unfortunately, the sheet music for all three of these works is now [unfortunately, IMO] out-of-print. Cohn's version of the "Three Preludes," oddly enough, is published by Warner Bros. Music (copyright, 1987) and, AFAIK, is widely available. If memory serves, Cohn gives a couple lines to the clarinet that Gach leaves with the piano and, FWIW, personally, I prefer the Cohn to the Gach. Others may disagree.

Best regards,
jnk
