I'm not sure if lip scum is the official terminology or not but I have noticed that I start to build up a layer of (residue?) on the reed around where my lip rests after about 3 hours of playing and slowly builds up thereafter (that's it for details). I have also noticed that other players don't seem to get this build up. So I am wondering if anyone else has also had this problem and has any suggestions with cleaning the reed or avoiding the build up?

As I play I will continue to keep the reed moist by inserting the whole reed (on the mouthpiece) into my mouth and lick the entire length of the vamp. This serves the dual purpose of keeping the reed somewhat "clean." You can also place the reed across your index finger, hold the heel with your thumb and give it a light brushing with warm water and a toothbrush.
