 Open and Closed mouthpieces

From what I gathered, I suppose open mouthpieces are more suited using soft reeds while closed mouthpieces using harder reeds.

Does it mean that open mouthpieces are more resistant to play with thats why they need softer reeds and closed mouthpieces are more free blowing?

How would using soft reeds(size 2.5 or 3) on closed mouthpiece affect the tone? Does it produce a thin sound?
Many ppl seem to suggest buying a medium facing mouthpiece instead of the extreme open or closed mouthpiece.What would be a good medium facing mouthpiece?

Among the 3 kinds of facing, which kind of facing would produce a darker and fuller tone? How would the higher register differ using different facing?

There's a lot more than three types of facings.

You might want to read a posting I made just yesterday in response to someone who was looking for that magical mouthpiece that made things "dark".

We have discussed mp/reed "set-ups" frequently, so I suggest "Search the Phorum" for a great variety of experience and opinions, try all combinations that are available to find "yours". Don

Hi, mp_curious;
Mark and Don are correct. There are literally dozens of mp/reed combinations you could try. I'd suggest you find one you like better than what you have, that's assuming you're looking for something 'better', then go that direction - more open, more closed, softer or harder reed etc. Most music stores will let you try their mouthpieces all day long. The reeds, however - once you've tried one, it's yours.
I've heard people play the most beautiful sounds on mp/reed setups that would **not** work for me, no matter how hard I tried. So, I'd aim for that sound I liked, using a setup I could manage, not theirs.
