When one buys a recording, besides looking on the orchestra's roster, how can one figure out who is playing second clarinet (perhaps principal). I bought a recording of Beethoven's 3rd (CSO, Solti conducting) and I know that Mr. Combs is playing first, but when talking about the second clarinetist with my teacher he told me it might be John Bruce Yeh. Is there an archive or list out there some where, not just for the Chicago Symphony (Cleveland, Berlin Phil perhaps )?
Thanks

At least through the '80s that would be my old teacher - Walter Wollwage. He had been second for many years during the reign of Clark Brody. He is the solo you hear on the Solti recording of the Symphonie Fantastique just before the Eb solo. His wife played the english horn in the Grant Park Symphony.

I started as second clarinet with the CSO in 1983 which included many, many Solti recordings including the second recording of the Solti/Berlioz done while on tour at the Salzburg festival.
One has to look at the liner notes or copyright date on the CD or LP in many cases. Solti and others have recorded many works twice with the same orchestra.

Sorry for the oversight Greg. My dealings with the CSO and the recordings that I have are a bit dated.
