Hello!!!

There are numerous threads on this very topic in the archives. You can use the search function and access them at your leisure. There are numerous BBoard members who lurk around on the Clarinet BBoard (Heather V. - a recruiter and Alexi - currently at the Armed Forces School of Music to name a few), and so I'm sure they will chime in soon and share their experiences!!! Where are you/will you be stationed???

Best Of Luck and Congratulations!!!
Clayton

Was your band liaison/auditioner SSG Sarah Witt?

Talk to Alexi. He just went through this exact scenario.

I agree - Alexi has had the most recent experience with basic training and is currently at the School of Music. All the best!

Hi Daniel --

I'm a lttle surprised that Alexi hasn't chimed in on this thread, but maybe he's not online this weekend.

If you use the search function at the top of the first message in this thread, and search on the term "sfalexi 2006" you will find most of his posts about his military band experience thus far.

I also note that he provides the two following email addys:

sfalexi@optonline.net
sfalexi1@aol.com

That oughta do it. Or, you could post a new topic entitled "SFAlexi Please Respond" -- that should get his attention!

Susan

I've enjoyed reading all the posts on the army bands today. I was in the Fort McPherson band from 1979-1989 (apparently Fort McPherson will be gone in the next few years and it will be sad to see that band go too), and it was a great place to be and learn and play. I met some of the best musicians I've ever worked with, and I tried to get everything I could from them.

I know lots of things have changed since my Army days, but I'd still recommend anyone thinking about joining to make sure you know exactly what you're getting into. Talk to a lot more people than just the person who recruits you to get an idea of what you'll be doing.

Fort McPherson isn't going away, it's just relocating up to Pope Air Force Base. The FORSCOM Band will continue to exist, at least for a while.

I agree. Talk to Alexi (he may be able to answer some of your questions [wink])

Just shoot me an email. I'll tell you what I know from experience. I'll try to get around to ASAP. I just don't get around to this board quite as often as I used to! I'll be back in full force come october or so (sorry all. I'm just warning you for my posts in advance . . .)

PS - There are others on this board that have been able to help me out when I was making a decision. It wouldn't hurt to shoot others an email such as Christopher Nichols, Mr. Redwine if you're interested in the premiere bands, or Ms. Van Beek above if she has the time. But I might be one of the people most RECENTLY going through the experience (still in training for it) so I might dare to say that my thoughts and experiences would be the 'freshest'. But for active duty life, I'd ask someone who's currently active duty.

Daniel,

Greetings, and welcome to the Army!! I have been a clarinetist with the Army for almost 17 years, so any questions you have about the band or Army in general, just shoot me an email and I will tell you anything you want to know.

I'm going on 13 years now. Basic training and the School of Music are both very different now (Alexi's going to be your best source on that) but I'd also be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the Army Band program. Now that all of the Independence activities are complete, I'll have more time. :)
