 clarinets galore!! (and youtube links)

hello,

Daughter went last Monday to a Young Musicians Competition held in Pamplona, which alternates each year between stings and winds. This year, when we arrived, we found that there were no less than 27 participants, 17 of them clarinets!! Compare that to the solitary oboe.

They aged from as young as 12, although most were 16, almost 17, the upper age limit. All played the clarinet well, and unlike other competitions, everyone was allowed to play whatever they had prepared completely, which was nice for the contestants, and showed the patience and niceness of the jury!! It made for a very long day for them, as we had things like 3 Weber concertinos, or two Gran Duos of Weber, and 3 Schumann fantasies, etc etc.

daughter played Finzi -the 1st 4 (so well recommended by BBoard members) and Stamitz no.3, and was awarded 2nd prize for her efforts, much to her surprise but she was far more uplifted by the kind comments from the judges. It just shows how essential encouragement is to any child in any activity.

Next day she played the same pieces for a far more serious cause..the only prize scholarship in her conservatory. It was eventually awarded to someone else (shall be at liberty to say who in Sept) but I have posted the videos on YouTube for a few days, mostly for my worldwide family and friends.

If anyone is interested, here are the links, and once again thanks to all who provide such a wealth of information on this board.

Your daughter obviously gets some positive support from her parents. Congratulations to all of you for a successful performance.

I played both videos to the last note--performances were wonderful.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Your daughter is a very talented musician. Thank you for sharing these competition videos.

Nothing quite like parents pushing you in the background, unfortunately (or fortunately) both my parents provided only occasional financial support to my musical endeavours, though my mum did bristle with pride on occasion.

Congratulations ... hope she achieves her dream.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Well,

We only pay the fees :), all the rest of the work, time put in practising & any talent she may have is hers alone; and the fact that she has such an excellent dedicated teacher.

She is still 2nd year middle school (music-wise too), so there's 4 more years of secondary music school to go, and soooo much to learn and better.

It was also nice to see that the clarinet was alive and well and popular!

I really liked it and she played great!

The only thing I don't like about this type of concert, is for example, the dead silence after the end of the first part.... I wonder if there is something the musicians can do about (or are most also believe in the same philosophy and live by the same culture?).

Clarinbass,

I am glad you noticed that bit about the silence. Until 2 years ago, this scholarship audition used to be a closed doors affair.

Then last year it was opened to the public and this year (I cut it out of the video) the director gave long instructions about we weren't to clap in between the pieces etc. Very few people other than parents turned up- perhaps because both the day and time were advertised wrongly-
but her teacher own clarinet teacher complained about the "funeral atmosphere"- couldn't understand about no applause and all the teachers looking like they were attending a wake, when normally they are all qite smiling.

I think you are right, 13-14 year olds should be made to feel as comfortable as possible in such circumstances, not like someone's going to chop their heads off!!!

She plays really well! She has a great sense of rhythm and a great sound which will both get her very far.
