I have a tiny oboe mouthpiece that takes single reeds. It sounds remarkably good, although it requires some stiff chops. The problem is that I doubt I'll find anyone selling the tiny clarinet-shaped reeds for it, so I'll have to make my own. Is there an FAQ on clarinet reedmaking?

Slice up some Eb clarinet reeds down their length to get the right width, and then shape the tip, as well as scraping them until the reed works for you.
I made one of these years ago, it worked pretty well making a fairly thick and dark sound, though (as you mentioned) it was tough going on the chops and proved to be even more of an embouchure wrecker than those Fibercane reeds!
I couldn't decide if a double lip embouchure worked better than a single lip embouchure on these as the mouthpiece I made was tiny, and mounted on a standard oboe staple.

Diz, these mouthpieces were made for a time by Chedeville, among others. They occasionally turn up on eBay where they usually sell for ridiculous amounts (IMHO) - well, maybe not so ridiculous considering the price for oboe reeds if you don't make your own.
Ken, I've never seen them side-by-side but, as I recall, the oboe mouthpiece is fairly close in size to the mouthpiece for an Ab sopranino clarinet. Vandoren makes Ab reeds and Woodwind and Brasswind says they have #2, 3 and 4 in stock (if you can trust them). Since I don't have an Ab, I've never tried to buy them, though.

I believe that JNK has the best solution. I had a brief experience with a silver S R oboe mp back in the 60's, while struggling to make suitable D R's and playing them, and, as I recall, it didn't work well enough to pursue. Yes, cut-down reeds were a real touchy problem. My impression, on tuning our small orch, was that there was less "uniformity" of pitch due to slight embouchure "changes", a bit like "bending" notes on sop cls. I returned it to the cellist-flutist owner, and tried but failed to recover it from his estate. I doubt its a solution to oboe reed problems. Don

I both have a Chedeville oboe mouthpiece (complete with nickel plated mouthpiece cap and single screw ligature) and have used an Ab clarinet. The two reeds (the one for the oboe mouthpiece compared to the one for the Ab horn) are not comparable in size. While you could cut the Ab reed down, you can also do the same with the Eb size of reed, a commodity that's much more available.
And, while the tiny little staple-mounted mouthpiece is a bitch to play from the embouchure standpoint, with my lips at least it's better than managing an oboe reed. Your mileage may vary...

Sorry but I don't know how to do that. I bought it used in January and had Morrie Backun personally overhaul it. Actually he called and said that he had checked the SN with Leblanc and been told that the instrument was once in their corporate collection. So Morrie did as little remedial work as necessary-pads for sure and a spring or two-and left all else in pristine condition to preserve value. The clarinet uses a Vandoren #3 and it sounds wonderful. I'm a low reed man (e.g. contra-alto, contra-bass, alto, and bass clarinet owner/player) and weigh 260# with big hands, but I still manage to play the little guy decently IMHO. It's in my collection and will be passed onto my daughters and their children. Again, sorry I can't provide a sound byte!
