first test drives on Buffet E11 and R13

I'm new to the clarinet (started in January) and play a student Arioso. I think it has a nice tone but I've been very disappointed with the workmanship. The manager of the shop where I take lessons talked me into trying an E11 and R13. To my surprise, the tone of the E11 was not that much better than the Arioso's. The R13 was another story. What I noticed most was how easy it is to play softly -- the notes just flow. What is different about the materials or construction that makes the tone so rich and the horn so free blowing?

amys,

It is common for new instruments to need adjustments. That is one possible reason why you might have found one to play so much better than the other. This assumes that you used the same mouthpiece and reed in your comparison of the three instruments.

Hans

I used my own new Vandoren B45 mouthpiece and the same reed on all of the horns. I was very careful not to move the reed so it wouldn't be a factor.

I've had to take the Arioso to a tech twice in the last month. First, a key fell off. Then, the bridge key wasn't working properly so I couldn't play some of the upper register notes. He also noticed that the fitting for the 1L key is very loose, causing it to wiggle back and forth. He said it shouldn't be like that until I've played it for years. And the corks are peeling off. But, as I said, the tone is good and the tone of the E11 was not that better, at least not enough that I would want to buy one at this point. I will covet the R13, however.
