With the other thread regarding coughing as a factor of boredom, I just had a thought regarding coughing in the concert hall.
I live in Los Angeles, the smog capital of the U.S., and coughing is rampant in concerts. Wondering if other cities out there show correlations between the quantity and magnitude of coughing and air quality levels (or perhaps climate?)
Thoughts?

Alex, you may be onto something, but perhaps the indoor air is the key. My mom says her face itches and her nose starts to run when she goes to a movie theatre. That is her usual reaction to dust, and they sure don't vacuum the seats in movie theatres very often. Perhaps this is an issue in concert halls as well.

You never hear any coughing at outdoor concerts...

I do ... but with very strange acoustics at an outdoor concert you very seldom really notice it. Unless you're sitting pretty close up you tend to hear the sound reinforcement system, anyway.
