Does a clarinet have a break in period and does the tone improve with break in?

May I suggest a search of the archives? There have been many discussions on this subject in the past.

I would recommend that anytime a person acquires a "new" wood clarinet - whether used from someone else or new from a store - they should play it with care for the first month or so. Let it acclimate to the new environment and to the level of playing that it will receive.

Will it improve over time? Who knows. What will improve it more will be to ensure that it's already in perfect playing condition with no leaking or defective pads, solid lever pivots with no wobbles, no junk in any of the tone holes, and with good, well sealing corks.

MOO,
Matt
