Hi. What a resource! And thanks for all recognition given to the brilliance of Eric Dolphy, and the extensive use of the bass clarinet in jazz, if not in any other form. Also inspired by Mr. Dolphy, I am a jazz player/composer and have found the bass clarinet to be essential to both my voice and the whole genre. Now my question. I have a lovely wooden H. Bettoney Bass Clarinet, marked with the Bettoney logo and SOMC, that I've had for many years, and have regularly enjoyed in performance. It was purchased from a vendor in San Antonio. Would anyone have any idea of it's age, and what the SOMC stands for? The vendor thought perhaps it's from the 1920's. And if there is any info on H. Bettoney's bass clarinet making history, I'd love to know. Most of the info I've found details his flute history. Thanks again for this wonderful forum. Toussaint.

My H Bet sop cl has USN [Navy] on it and prob dates to WW1 !!, quite a good player ! Harry was still writing and critiquing other's works in the 1950's. Hopefully others may have more precise mfgr'g period info. Please post your ser #, I'll post mine for possible comparison. Luck, Don

Hi , the serial # on my Bettoney b cl is 6089. Sound familiar?
My soprano cl is an Andre Chabot, serial # 48410. I look forward to learning more about both Bettoney and Chabot.
