 a nice piece with/after finzi
Author: bawa

Any recommendations for a piece to be played in June for an important audition?
Level= someone who has just played the Stamitz NÂș3, and is playing the Finzi Bagatelles in a couple of weeks. Intends to use at least some part of the Bagtelles, what would be another other good piece to play?
The audition is for all instruments and one person gets a grant, so it has to be something that shows up well against others performing on pianos/strings/flutes etc.

Lutoslawski Dance Preludes is comparable in difficulty to the Finzi but in a contrasted style. Not the most original choice, maybe, but a good piece.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Thank you, I shall look it up. It is not something I am familiar with, so at the very least I will have listened to something new!

Is there a score with a piano accompaniment easily available?

Teacher also suggested something by Sophr: how would you rate any piece by him? She has time in hand, and is a good learner.

In an earlier post I learnt that I & 2 of the Bagatelles are in Grade 6 ABRSM exam, whereas 5 is in Grade 8. However, in this case, she is playing them all for her mid-year evaluation, hence her idea that she could tackle something more "difficult" to add to the June audition so that at least she would have tried her best.

The Lutoslawski exists in versions with orchestra and with piano. The version with piano is certainly readily available. There is a recording with orchestra by Stoltzman - I don't like the way he plays it, but others will disagree.

As you know, the Finzi movements are (or have recently been) set for ABRSM grades as follows:
movement grade
1 6
2 6
3 3
4 not set
5 8

The Lutoslawski movements are set as follows:
movement grade
1 7
2 6
3 8
4 5
5 8
but the catch is that for grade 8 you have to play movements 3 and 5, not either/or, and movement 3 is quite tricky: more difficult than anything in the Finzi, in my opinion.

Thank you David, that was very clear and useful.

I don't live in the UK so the way they are asked to play in the exam their is not relevant but the gradings help.

Another thing, is their any other recording of the bagatelles apart of the Emma ____ one? Its the only one I can find, and I seem to remember that people were not very impressed with it.

There is a recording on the NAXOS label, recorded by Robert Plane

Apart from tone, interpretation etc the big difference between the Emma Johnson recording and the Robert Plane is that the former is accompanied by piano, the latter by strings.

The Robert Plane cd has a very nice selection of Finzi's work, including the clarinet concerto.

The ABRSM produce a series of CDs with the grade exam pieces. Each piece is presented as a performance, clarinet+piano or clarinet alone as the case may be. There is also a recording of each piano accompaniment without the clarinet. (You aren't allowed to use these in the exam in lieu of a live pianist).

The list of pieces changes about every three years, so you may find that you can't get CDs for all the movements I mentioned. Also, because there is a CD for each grade, it's an expensive way of buying a single work that is used across several grades. But these disks are a useful resource for practicing playing against a piano accompaniment.

The major disadvantage of the disks is that the tempi tend to be quite lively. You need to be able to play well up to speed before you can use them. No doubt you can use software to slow them down; I'm no expert on such tricks.

OK, that might be worth a try.

Currently she is using the midi files so that I located via woodwind.org: they work beautifully on the Yamaha piano via a floppy disk, and the tempo is easily changed i.e. slowed down for some of the Finzi!!

Is there no one else apart from Emma J who has recorded the clarinet and piano verison? Woodwind.org discussion boarders, heres your chance...

Gervase de Peyer accompanied by Gwenneth Pryor recorded the Five Bagatelles on CD - "English Music for Clarinet and Piano" 1987 Chandos Chan 8549. Fine recording.
