We are doing clarinet auditions at our school very soonand the music is the solo from Blue Shades by Ticheli. In it is a clarinet bend on an altissimo b natural whole note to an altissimo c natural whole note and I am looking for suggestions for a way to do this bend. If you have any advice please reply!
thanx

Play the top C but lipped down so it sounds B, then lip it up to C.

Kelly,

Check the acrhives by doing a search (look at the top of this page) for bend and you will find a lot of material. Start there and then come back with questions.

thanx for the search hint
i found it very helpful
ive found the adjusted tonguing with eeee yah more effective than the embochure way
no matter how hard i try the lower embochure is not as effective as the tonguing,
if you have any other suggestions please give them,
if not thank you soo much!!!!=)

I assume you are talking about one finger B to thumb C?

Play the B and very slowly slide your left-hand first finger off the hole. All you need to practice is being gradual enough with the slide.... Though I haven't tried it recently, I'm pretty sure you don't need to make any embouchure or tongue adjustments to play this slide.

Lipping down would be more difficult as you may not be able to hit the B immediately.

For longer glissando (especially those over different registers), changing tongue position and oral cavity stuff is useful. For a glissando between two adjacent notes though you should be able to just slide your finger off the key.

(When I tried this at home, I found that I did adjust my tongue position a bit to make it smoother. Alphie's exercise below seems like a good one)

Start practicing by playing “Twinkle, twinkle little star” only using the mouthpiece and barrel and no hand stop. Use the same technique for smears.
