So, we had a concert last night. There are three bands in my school... Freshman, Symphonic and Wind Symphony, in that order. I am in the wind symphony, and as we were warming up beforehand, our director got all serious and said... i have an announcement to make after the concert. we were kind of scared because he sounded kind of sad. so we went through the concert, all 5 songs, and then he goes so i told the wind symphony i had an announcemt to make.
"Our Reynoldsburg High School Marching Band has been invited, and i've talked to the band boosters and exectutives in the program, and we all agreed on this...... for new years, 2007, we are going to go march in the New Year's Day parade....... In London, England."
we all kinda freaked out. this is truley a once in a life time opportunity. given the school board approves, we will be spending 6 days in london around this time next year. how awesome is that?
We are the music, while the music lasts.

thats a great opportunity. my schools band has been invited to rome, england, france, switzerland, and some other places for 06/07 but we wont get to go no where cus the school board is strict. we will go to disney for SB so thats cool.

Great! It's always wonderful when you get to travel to another country to play music, especially at a young age.
For many years before I got into high school, my high school band was invited to Veracruz, Mexico, every year to march in the annual Carnivale celebration -- and all paid for by the Mexican government! So growing up, my classmates and I couldn't wait until high school and our turn came. Then Ross Perot had his say in the "no pass no play" frenzy that gripped Texas schools in the early 80's, which was fine except the legislation he influenced also put a serious strain on any trips that required absence from school. So it wasn't until my junior year that we managed, at last, to go. It was definitely worth waiting for. A Mexican navy ship sailed to our city to pick us up, and we spent two days sailing down to Veracruz, another week in the city doing all kinds of stuff, then sailing back home for another two days. The memories still linger 21 years later!
So go make some memories that you'll bore this Bulletin Board with 21 years from now!

I have travelled all to japan, all around Canada and the States with marching show band... it's a really great opportunity to travel. I played snare drum in it though.... being in the drumline is WAYYYY more fun than playing a plastic clarinet!

That's pretty amazing and I'm sure will be an incredible experience. You will be sure to let us all know how it goes. The band I am currently in was invited to a competition in China in the spring, but unfortunately our school district has a strict policy about traveling over seas.

Most likely, the agenda and chaperon scene will be super tight traveling overseas in a high school band setting --- revel in the moment anyway. Hopefully, a courtesy bus tour will be pre-booked, and time set aside to see the main historical sites. Be sure to practice the buddy system when exploring the town and if possible I recommend checking out Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus; 75,000 titles on multiple floors! Also, remember never to say "Guns N' Roses" when riding the tube or in a crowd of people --- hehe. v/r Ken
