 Anonymous Posters?

I know for a fact that certain really big people in the clarinet world read the the clarinet bboard. I'm sure most big clarinet players check this board. Some of these big names post here, regularly or not, under thier own name. Have you ever wondered who might be posting under alias names?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I never really wonder until they start talking about orchestral gigs, or the last time they played with Stanley Drucker, or about traveling to another country to tour, etc. etc. Then I start to wonder about who they might be, their age (which is also anonymous), and my imagination runs wild to the point of trying to figure out what they might look like. Are they tall? Short? Have hair? If so, what color? Facial hair? Do they wear T-shirts and jeans to go to clarinet festival? Maybe a button down? Maybe a sport jacket? Etc. etc. It's kinda fun and my mind thinks quickly so I can get MANY combinations through my head in a matter of seconds.

As per myself, I use my real name, however may as well be anonymous.

Although I do get a kick wondering whether people are picturing me incorrectly when they try to figure out what I might look like. Especially the ones that get my gender wrong! That's always a good laugh!

out of all the pro players (in NZ/Aus and USA) that i know, virtually none have even the slightest interest in this website. For sure, some of my friends have used it to find info, or a lost friends email etc.... but in terms of regular daily browsing, almost everyone i know expresses disinterest.
that being said- for sure there ARE great players who drop in reasonably often, and great players who drop in daily, but statistically they are a small sample of the people out there making noise. It's worth noting that only a small percentage of the worlds population has access to the internet, or for that matter the spare cash to buy $500 bells and mouthpieces!!!!
i'm not trying to "diss" the website, but just put it in perspective- big thanks to those who work to keep it going!
keep playing the good tunes

Sometimes a big player will be mentioned and that player will show up as a student, friend, colleague, etc will mention it to him/her.

Did you know that there's a special holster on Stanley Drucker's music stand at Avery Fischer Hall to hold his Blackberry? He likes to check this BBoard during long rests.

There's some very attractive presented boards to compete with out there.
Maybe some extra visual incentives will help :-)

This BBoard honestly doesn't "compete".

First I’ve to say that every time I visited this BBoard, there is so much response and than also so much professional response. I want to thank Mark and GBK again for running this source of knowledge.

For me.. every single person that posts here is already famous, why? Because they will be probably on the internet for a very long time! It really doesn't matter to me if the poster is one of the BIG names or not... If I can learn something from a person that’s less famous, than that's fine to... You can only learn stuff if you dare to try things, also a beginner can have a splendid idea...

But then again, I have to say that the knowledge level is very high because of many important players/repairers/manufacturers etc.. that often visit this board. But it’s smart to use a different name. They have more freedom to write and can learn how other people really think about something, without being a idol to the readers…

Apart from that, there may be another reason: There are google and a lot of other, uhm, archiving tools that scrape a lot of online BBs. As a celebrity you don't want to find yourself on some advertising site endorsing a certain product. And as a VIP you simply can't post a private view - it will automatically and implicitly be made an "official" statement.

I was really encouraged by Morrie Backun's posting on the topic of his new mouthpieces. It was interesting to realize that products that are being discussed are often read by the makers themselves. This occurs quite often with Gregory Smith and Walter Grabner, Ben Redwine, etc. That really adds a lot of flavor and "weight" to the topic being discussed. Nothing like getting it straight from the mouth of the man (or woman)himself/herself.

Absolutely right, nothing like getting from the creator, as well as those who have first hand knowladge.

Quite frankly ... who gives a frig if it's a big name or not ... it's a community for god's sake and that's all that is important.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

You're absolutely right there...
But, why couldn't they use they're own name only on occasion and the rest of the time a anonymous name? They can “defend” their product then with their own name and discus the fun part with the anonymous name…That’s how I would do it…

Then you would be in serious trouble with me on this BBoard. People with relationships with companies, even non-paid, must disclose the relationship if they're talking about the product. That's just normal etiquette. For instance, in GBKs discussions about the Forté clarinet, you'll see that he mentions he was a non-paid tester of the early models. Or "The Doctor" mentioning that he has a product when he discusses the chemistry of something.

I’m glad to know that’s no option, people will try to do strange things to promote their products. I think that you’re doing a fine job running this board, it was just a suggestion what people could think of to promote their products…

I’m just curious why you’re so sure that this isn’t the case.. if someone would create a user on 2 different locations… it would be nearly impossible to trace it to one person?

Not impossible at all ... we have our ways!

The more insidious way is for people, anonymous or otherwise, to talk up a product without disclosing their connections to the manufacturer of the product. Sometimes it might just be that their good friends (they should tell us that, and most people do) but sometimes they're getting discounts on the products, too. In that case they're essentially paid spokespeople, and wouldn't be allowed to talk about the product unless answering a direct question.

I know that sometimes people slip through the cracks, but we try our best to keep things under control.

I think you're doing a very very good job then, thanks for answering my question, everything is much clearer now...
